When pronounced correctly, "Guatemala" flies from the throat like a projectile: "Huatemala." Respectively pronounced, "Guat's Happening" emerges as both a poor pun and a legitimate homophone of "what's happening." That phonetic voyage is the first journey of many, my friends. For four weeks, I will take you through my days in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala; living with a host family, completing 100 hours of Spanish classes and traveling within and as far from Xela as timing allows. Andele!
